Howell Williams - Flying Instructor

Howell Williams joined the staff of the School in 1999. He is a member of the AOPA Flight Instructor Committee and had been a part-time flying instructor at Sherwood Flying Club, Nottingham for the past twenty years. He has an aerobatics instructor rating and has held CAA FCL Examiner ratings for GR and RTF (VHF). He has maintained an interest in gliding. He was born in Swansea and was educated at Nottingham High School. From 1955 to 1958 he read Engineering (Metallurgy) at Imperial College, University of London, and 1958 to 1961 conducted research into metal fatigue at the University of Cambridge and was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. |
Howell joined the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) as a Research Officer from 1961 to 1967. He served on the staff of University of Aston in Birmingham as a Lecturer from 1967 to 1972, responsible for post-graduate teaching and research. From 1972 to 1988 he held divisional appointments with the CEGB and PowerGen, becoming Head of Reliability Engineering until 1992.
He was appointed Assistant Dean of Engineering at the University of Birmingham, from 1993 until his retirement in 1997. He is married to Janice.
